Alexander Appleton’s Expertise Research scientist and software engineer. I work for a quantitative Hedge Fund in Berkeley using methods from statistics, machine learning and optimization to improve their trading strategies. In this role I create software systems in python, with the occasional use of C++ for speed. During my PhD I found new types of singularities in 4d Ricci flow. My work straddled both pure and applied mathematics. While I wrote numerical PDE solvers in C++ to simulate the singularity formation, I also employed pencil and paper to then rigorously prove their existence. Having grown up in Germany, and subsequently studied on three continents, I have been privileged to experience many cultures first hand. In particular, I have developed a deep interest in the Chinese culture and language, which I pursued next to my graduate studies at UC Berkeley.
