Andrew Phillips’s Expertise As I look back on what is becoming a daunting number of years in my 3+ completely different careers, I'm finding that three words, "risk", "opportunity", "trust" have been central to all that I've done. I spent 17 years in banking, almost all of it as a corporate banker/commercial lender and a lot of it as a team leader. The basics of risk and opportunity were usually derived from the reams of paper we analyzed. Understanding the analysis was more complex and with fewer straight lines than performing the analysis. There was no substitute for knowledge and experience in evaluating the risk and finding thEe opportunities. No matter how good the deal was on paper, we had to be able to trust the principals. Challenges arise in every business, and you can only bank people who will step up when they do. As president of a construction company specializing in cutting, core drilling, and demolishing concrete, I had to be able to see both the opportunities and risks in all of our larger or more complex projects. Huge "cookie-cutter" jobs posed the risk of having to find more efficient ways of doing things in order to meet the competitive pricing required. Unique, one-of-a-kind jobs sometimes took inventing new ways of doing things as well as having a more tried and true back-up plan to pick up the pieces if the new ways didn't work. Even with the best of planning, we had to trust that our customers would perform their duties, from layout to payment. We also needed to trust in our employees' abilities and willingness to do the hard and smart work required. We had unions and suppliers that we had to trust to do their parts. Anyone dropping the ball required a lot of juggling. As an attorney, I've tried to make sure my door is always open. After nearly ten years, a lot of different risks and opportunities have come through that door. I have to say that for the first few years, I was mostly a "fixer", a person that people came to to fix a problem. As I've gotten farther into this career, I've become much more of risk and opportunity identifier and planner. Every time I think I've seen it all, something new pops up, but I've seen enough to help our teams identify and either avoid or mitigate most of the risks. I have been heavily engaged in supporting about 3,000 union and field staff, concentrating on union and safety issues. Finding and helping manage the risk and opportunities in many CBAs, PLAs, and other agreements is challenging enough, but is supported by finding internal and external partners who can be trusted to make it work.
