Ann Thompson’s Expertise I’ve worn a lot of hats in 25+ years of journeying through a career. I’ve traveled the well-worn career paths of the corporate world. Climbed up and down the ladders and across the hierarchies; pioneered trails as an entrepreneur through exhilarating peaks and devastating valleys of starting, scaling, and selling a company. I’ve coached and mentored, and hired and fired; and I’ve been coached and mentored and hired and fired. My desire has always been to walk with the Lord. Do what He wants me to do. Be who He wants me to be. I would have said I was a faith-driven leader. Sometimes, I’m confident I got it right. Most of the time though, I realize now, I didn’t have a clue. I was certainly driven. Driven by expectations: mine and others;' increasing responsibilities; bigger titles, who’s who lists; and LinkedIn followers. Each day, driven to be better than the day before. Stronger. More impactful. More proficient. More efficient. More (ahem) humble. But then, after selling the company that we’d worked so hard to build, that crazy, successful path I had blazed for myself led me, full speed, smack into a big, empty space of nothingness. No job. No responsibilities. No obligations. I was burned out and worn down. Truth be told, I was too tired to move. Too drained to start some new, next thing. Too emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausted to do anything other than rest. For the first time since I started working at age 16, I had space. Time. Margin. I’d never been to this place before. This wide open green pasture where God, my creator, seemed to be inviting me not to keep running and reaching, but to lie down and rest with Him. Is this what Psalm 23 was actually all about? So I rested. Stopped trying to solve problems and create newness; fasted from the fertilizer of challenges I’d been force-feeding myself in an effort to “grow” for decades. I’d spent years asking Him to show me how to glorify Him in my work. The work I wanted to do. But in the quiet of rest, perhaps I heard Him on this topic of work for the very first time. In the quiet, He willed me and wooed me to a new place. A longing to seek Him first. Rather than seeking Him once I’m where I want to be. It's a place of deep trust. Courage to step out into something unknown. Vulnerability to expose myself to the world. Focus to remind myself that the world isn’t my validation or affirmation; He is. Do you want your career to be truly faith driven? I want it for you. I believe He wants it for you, too. Let’s work together to make it happen.
