Anna Andreasson’s Expertise The principal aim of my thesis project (working title: Medieval Gardens in the North – Images and Reality) is to contribute to a better understanding of gardens and horticulture in the Middle Ages in the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Finland) useful to current research. New findings and research in the last decades increasingly show that our old image, formed during the late 19th and 20th century, is in many ways dated and often based more on assumptions than facts. It is more a block than a help at this point. I want to try to trace medieval gardening in the North through as many sources as possible – archaeological as well as historical sources, like texts and images. But my main focus, as an archaeologist, is material culture, and I also hope to contribute to the development of the field of Garden Archaeology in the Nordic countries. What kind of gardens where actually present in this part of Europe in the late middle ages? Where there ornamental gardens? How were gardens used and seen – as symbols, metaphors and as physical places? What makes gardens different from all other elements in a cultural landscape?. Homepage: www.archaeogarden.se Primary work: Research, project management and education within the areas of Garden archaeology and history, Garden restoration, Green Cultural Heritage Management, and the History of Cemeteries and Tombstones. At CBM/POM I was a member of the team working with surveying and collecting old cultivars for the national genebank. I worked with many plant groups but mostly ornamental trees and shrubs, perennial ornamental plants, roses and ornamental bulbs and tubers. Apart from surveying and collecting I also worked with research, text production, educating volunteers, and promoting knowledge about the program. The Swedish Biodiversity Centre (CBM) was established 1994 as a national collaborating unit with the Swedish Agricultural University and Uppsala University as principle leading institutions. CBM’s mandate is to initiate and stimulate research on both domesticated and wild biodiversity, as well to work with education and information dissemination. The national Programme for Cultivated Plant Diversity (Programmet for Odlad Mangfald, POM) was established to insure the long-term survival and sustainable use of cultivated plant resources. It was initiated in 1998 by the Ministry of Agriculture in consultation with authorities, organisations, the private sector and non-profit organisations active on the issues. The task of the proram is to find, collect and conserve unique plants of interest that can be of value in the future. POM not only intends to save the plants but also the history and knowledge surrounding them. Today POM has been moved to the Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Alnarp. The national gene bank of living plants was established in the summer of 2016. www.pom.info. The archaeologydepartment of the Malmo museum (Malmo Kulturmiljo), where I used to work, is today a part of the company Sydsvensk Arkeologi AB. www.sydsvenskarkeologi.se.
