And that isn’t to mean in the health and fitness world. I am talking about inequities of communities and people with poor access to critical services on the most fundamental level. I had felt a pull towards this for a long time and it became much more intense after my dad passed in 2019 then undeniable during the pandemic. My dad dedicated a lot of his life to help serve underserved communities and after his passing and being in this pandemic I saw how short life is and that we have just one chance to follow our highest purpose and help teach our kids and the next generation to do the same. This includes teaching our true history, the inequities currently going on in our world, and how we can best help those with the most need. After a whole lot of meditating, soul searching, and vision making I started to work through these feelings and put them into words. Through this work I felt a pull to Africa and shortly after, I was asked to help run the non-profit GIFTS Rwanda to bring about sustainable change to a community living in poverty. This organization raises funds to build houses for families with none, plant community gardens for them to grow food, buy beads for the women to make beaded bags for income, pay for schooling for the children who cannot afford it, and pay for the health care for those who have none. Through this work GIFTS Rwanda is addressing the root cause of the poverty in Rwanda, which is the genocide that took place 27 years ago between the two ethnic groups who inhabit the country: the Tutsi and Hutu. GIFTS Rwanda is promoting reconciliation between genocide survivors and perpetrators (murderers) as well as promoting sustainable development and growth to help raise the community out of poverty. I plan to travel to Rwanda to visit and work directly in the village and to take my girls in the future. Here’s to following your heart, listening to your inner voice, not letting your ego stop you, setting your intention, and being brave enough to step in the arena and get your ass kicked.
