Ben Reininga’s Expertise Leveraging my passion for journalism’s digital transformation, I help tech and media companies innovate market-defining content strategies and platforms to expand their reach and audience impact. Starting in September 2024, I’ll be serving as Harvard’s Nieman Fellow to pursue a course of study on creator journalists, exploring safeguards and responsible practices for news on social platforms. From leading global news at Snapchat, video at Gizmodo, and the newsrooms at NowThisNews and Refinery29, I’ve built ecosystems and removed obstacles to enable diverse journalists to bring stories to light with rich, human, progressive angles. PUSHING STRATEGIC INITIATIVES FORWARD IN A BROKEN MEDIA LANDSCAPE I motivate people to rise to the challenge of creating tangible, measurable improvements, and I thrive in the face of clear problems and when I have a real sense of ownership. Throughout my management career, I’ve been proud of recruiting newsroom teams that punch above their weight in responding to the speed and real-time feedback of day-to-day news. My teams broke award-winning stories that were ahead of their time, from the dark side of tech advancements to life across America as a transgender teen to the origins of fringe theories. At Gizmodo Media Group, I designed and implemented the video strategy and centralized teams around achieving common KPIs for twelve diffused sites. In addition to defining and expanding news at Snapchat to reach tens of millions of people around the globe each day, I’m proud of how we’ve removed barriers to entry for underrepresented and underfunded creator journalists on the platform. We also created partnerships that have persisted with major traditional media outlets like Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, NBC, The Guardian, BBC, and Le Monde. REVEALING THE TRUE NATURE OF ISSUES IS THE FIRST STEP I got my first taste for journalism while working for the student paper at Columbia University and have pursued it in various forms ever since. I’ve seen the power of great storytelling and worked on creating business models that enable journalists to reach people where they are. It might sound corny, but I believe we can create a better world by continuing to re-think both sides of this equation: providing access to reliable, engaging stories and doing it in ways that are responsible and sustainable.
