  I've been extremely fortunate to have worked alongside growers and horticultural researchers since graduating from university in 2012. This has enabled me to get an insight into how research is used in the ‘real world’. Knowing that the work I have been involved with is going to directly tackle issues growers are facing has been the primary reason I am pursuing a career in applied entomological research. My PhD focused on how control methods can be improved by exploiting naturally occurring behavioural patterns in the pest species spotted wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii. In the years post my PhD, I focused on a wide range of pests and beneficial invertebrates on soft, stone and pome fruit s in the UK and overseas based at East Malling. A recent move has brought me to Aotearoa, New Zealand to finally satisfy an itch I have had since 2012. I have taken on the team leader position of the temperate fruit crop entomology team at Plant and Food Research and am excited about this new career opportunity.
