Betsy Hasegawa’s Expertise Dr. Betsy Hasegawa’s (she/her/hers; Ainu, First People of Japan and Japanese heritages; Ed.D., Harvard Graduate School of Education) teaching, coaching, writing, and consulting practice have focused on adaptive leadership, adult development, groups and organizational systems, authority and leadership, the politics of diversity, managing complex organizational systems, and developing sustainable organizations and communities. Dr. Hasegawa works in educational, non-profit, community, grassroots, and corporate settings, using her skills and capacities as a coach, facilitator, and consultant helping organizations and individuals to successfully align their work with their purpose and values. Dr. Hasegawa has been Associate Vice President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (AVP EDI) at South Seattle College since August 2018. Betsy is honored that she was invited to build community, develop leadership, and promote healing as part of an ambitious plan to co-create an intentionally anti-racist college. Betsy is pleased to work with faculty and staff to promote more active, relational, and connected ways of teaching and engaging, with the goal of improving educational experiences and achievement for students, and promote racial equity and educational justice. Prior to assuming the role of AVP EDI at South, Betsy was Director for Intercultural Affairs and Leadership at Whatcom Community College (WCC), where she enjoyed building community and developing leadership with systemically non-dominant students and serving as co-advisor to the college’s Latinx Leadership Club, Muslim Student Association, and the Native/Indigenous Student Association. Prior to her roles in the community college system, Betsy consulted to international non-profits, and taught classes in adaptive leadership, organizational complexity, adult development, group dynamics, organizational complexity, managing cultural diversity, and the politics of identity, at Western Washington University, Columbia University (Teachers College), and Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Prior to her academic and consulting career, Betsy was co-owner of an art gallery in Seattle. In addition to her other work, Dr. Hasegawa served on the Lh’aqTeMish (Lummi) Nation Peacemaking Circle Leadership Team. She is also a Fellow of the AK Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems, a Co-creator with Group Relations International, and a member of GREX - An Organization For The Study Of Authority, Leadership, And Group Dynamics.
