Brendan Kern’s Expertise My long-term, big-picture goals are to remove barriers to access and success in education for all students; advocate for policies, procedures, and practices that are student-centered and recognize the realities of our students' lives; and to advocate for uprooting the systemic forces that harm students. I am a huge advocate for DEI efforts and am always looking for ways to support them at a variety of levels, from the classroom to national policy. I am open to working in areas beyond education in pursuit of these same goals of equity, access, opportunity, and matching the way we run our society to the realities of people's lives. Basically, I'm looking to dismantle the kyriarchy, one step at a time. I worked at Johnson C. Smith University, an HBCU in Charlotte, NC, from 2005, when I was placed there as part of my postdoctoral fellowship, to 2023 when I resigned as a tenured Associate Professor of Biology in order to seek a new direction for my career. I worked at JCSU as an educator, advisor, and general-purpose student advocate. My work with students outside of the classroom involved academic, career, and personal advising, connecting students to resources, generally helping students solve problems, and being a primary contact person for students needing help. I gathered and analyzed data for my department tracking student success, supporting grant-writing efforts, and for internal and external reporting.
