Bruno Velloso’s Expertise I am a Ph.D.-trained economist that now works in machine learning and data science. Data has been at the heart of everything I have worked on over the past decade, both in my professional work as a quantitative financial research analyst (fixed income), and in my academic experience as an economist. I pride myself on being someone that has both the deep academic expertise to be able to extract meaningful statistical relationships within a complicated dataset – to understand the detailed econometrics and machine learning algorithms that underpin that process – , and that has extensive practical and industry-level experience in communicating and working with clients of all kinds over the course of my non-academic career. With extensive presentation experience in both academia and with hundreds of clients, I can effectively convey findings, recommendations, and insights to both technical and non-technical audiences. Much of my academic research work has been focused on using large, web-scraped datasets to analyze interesting questions about economics and development, in particular how technology adoption and the presence of e-commerce market places has affected growth and development in South America. Through this process, I have become quite proficient at various coding languages and statistical software programs (Python, R, Spark, SQL, Git, etc.), as well as managing large/complicated data pipelines. All this experience has been supplemented by an intensive data science program by The Data Incubator. I am confident I will be able to quickly learn and adapt to any additional tools I may not yet have worked with extensively; and, of course, you get the added benefit of the hard-earned economic intuition I’ve built from many years of study as an economist. Ultimately, if you need someone with the capability to use existing ML modules in Python or R, or to create custom classes and estimators – for example, manually calculate gradients from custom loss functions for a very specific problem –, I can do both. I am both a little embarrassed and a little proud of the fact that I very much enjoy building databases and machine learning models in my free time (mainly embarrassed): an NBA fan, I have created a large basketball dataset, scraped exclusively from public sources, to build (surprisingly, fairly good!) NBA player and team projection models. Please see the Jupyter notebooks in my "NBADataProject" GitHub repo if you’re curious about some of the things I’ve done: https://github.com/brunocvelloso/NBADataProject
