Carol Schaefer’s Expertise Carol Schaefer's first book, a memoir entitled The Other Mother: A Woman's Love for the Child She Gave Up for Adoption (Soho Press, 1991) is considered a classic in adoption literature. The Other Mother is listed in 500 Great Books by Women, a Penguin Books Reader's Guide, a list that goes back to the eleventh century. Adapted as a television movie by NBC, The Other Mother, starring Frances Fisher, scored high in the ratings with 25 million viewers. Acquired by the Lifetime Channel, the movie aired many times from 2000 to 2008. Grandmothers Counsel the World: Women Elders Offer Their Vision for Our Planet (Shambhala, 2006) has been translated into ten languages. A spiritual biography of Mary Queen of Scots was published in 2002, which she’s adapted into a full-length screenplay. Her play, The Sacred Virgin, had a three-month run in 2002. Her fifth and latest book entitled Searching ..., the sequel to The Other Mother, takes the reader through the complexities of integrating her son and his adoptive family with her own over the twenty-seven years since their reunion, and draws on extensive research as well as the stories of others to offer guidance and hope for creating enriching relationships after reunion. Woven within the narrative is Schaefer’s remarkable creative journey, from overcoming her fears of publicly telling her story, through the book’s writing and publication, to the experience of the NBC movie version airing before an audience of 25 million viewers. Schaefer has appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, MSNBC, and many local television and radio programs around the country and in Canada, including New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. She has often been a keynote speaker and given numerous workshops at adoption conferences since 1991. Schaefer has also worked as a journalist and advertising copywriter. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Winthrop University and was selected for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
