I am currently volunteering at a non-profit called Future Possibilities for Kids where I strongly believe in it’s mission of helping children build confidence through leadership and community action. I experienced mentorship programs growing up, and with this chance to give back, it feels like things have come full circle. What motivates me the most is knowing that I have an unwavering commitment to enriching the lives of children, youth, and their families. Recently, I have embarked on a project in which I am helping to develop a children’s educational YouTube channel. This endeavor excites me because I want to improve the learning capabilities of young children everywhere, especially in the way of illiteracy. It’s a growing national crisis of which I feel must change. During my internship at Behaviour Innovations, I learned how to implement individualized programs for children and youth with autism and cerebral palsy. Guided by registered psychologists and behaviour analysts, I grew confident with the use of evidence based interventions centered on ABA therapy. I worked with two separate groups. The first being young children at the Children’s College Department where I rotated between four clients, and the second being adolescents at the Youth Hub Department where I alternated between three clients. Some were non-verbal which posed challenges at first, however I gained success once I learned to adapt. In my time of working with refugee youth at Culture Link, I enjoyed building quality relationships with young people whose backgrounds were different from mine. It led me to instinctually practice cultural humility and to embrace reciprocity. In collaboration with youth, I have been successful at creating safe spaces which thrive on inclusiveness, diversity, and mutuality. One of the things I enjoy doing most is getting to know families. My experiences of interacting with parents in classroom and recreational settings have broadened my understanding of family dynamics. Through these relationships I have improved my communication and problem solving. When I observed social-emotional challenges amongst children in the educational space, I created unique activities to boost self-esteem. I found that music and visual art centered on strengths greatly improved peer interactions. Acceptance through self expression was the key.
