Charles Patchett’s Expertise CHARLES PATCHETT is an ex. RAF Phantom Navigator and Boscombe Down Trials Officer. He is currently retired but retains a role as an engineering consultancy specialising in the specification, design and implementation of intelligent systems, and their properties, with specific interest regarding their certification for general air and road use. He has now retired from the Virtual Engineering Centre, University of Liverpool but is currently employed as a part-time Senior Lecturer by the University of Central Lancashire teaching MSc students in aspects of aeronautical engineering. Until 2012he was employed as an avionic systems engineer working at BAE SYSTEMS, Warton, England leading the Intelligent Flight Systems Research Group within the R&T Department. This team was instrumental in leading the BAE Systems aspects of the ASTRAEA programme for development of a UAS autonomous avionic system suitable for certified operation in non-segregated airspace. He has undertaken roles within the Eurofighter Avionic Joint Team and the Future Offensive Air System project and led a team researching stealthy avionics. He spent four years researching decision support and information fusion systems for application within the Eurofighter Typhoon and SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS Gripen projects. For the last ten years he has conducted research into autonomous air systems and is the author of the Advanced Autonomous Integrated Mission System (AAIMS) which is a specialised decision architecture for complex control of unmanned air vehicles.
