Christine Wheeler’s Expertise Working as an operator in a healthcare environment may not seem very important, but it truly is. Customers, in the form of family members, call in to the hospital looking for their loved ones because they are worried, concerned, sometimes panicked, and sometimes cannot locate a family member. Operators are the first exposure many persons have to the facility. If we were to talk or respond in an abrupt manner, the impression on the customer would not be good. When we remain calm and try to help them in any way we can, they remain calm. Most customers are anxious because we are dealing with a family member. They want answers and it is up to the operator to get them to the correct party to answer their concerns. Operators where I am employed are also a first line of defense when medical codes are called. We are the voice behind announcing the code quickly and succinctly so the hospital staff can hear it and respond. We are also responsible for keeping all code books up to date. Each code gets documented for the government. Also, when dealing with healthcare situations, families and friends do not want an automated system answering the phone - they want a live person. It is my pleasure to try to make their experience an easy and sympathetic one. The top three skills I have with being an operator are, that first and foremost, I am sympathetic to their concerns and I can certainly empathize with them. It can be agonizing to try to get information about a loved one. Second, when code alarms ring, I am able to remain cool under the pressure of bells and whistles going off, I call the code in a calm matter and make sure my paperwork is complete. Third, I am able to take charge of a situation and get it resolved. Many times we get calls from patients for every reason imaginable. I think it is less confusing for them to call "O" than press their call button, or they cannot find the call button. As an operator, we get a myriad of strange questions and requests. We do our best to accomodate or get the patient to the correct party.
