Dale Brumfield’s Expertise A 1981 Fine Arts graduate of VCU and a 2015 graduate of the VCU English department with an MFA in fiction and creative nonfiction writing, I am the author of the short story collection “Three Buck Naked Commodes” and four novels: “Remnants” the eNovels “Trapped Under the Pack-Ice” and “Bad Day at the Amusement Park”. My horror novel "Standers" is currently out of print. My history book "Richmond Independent Press: A History of the Underground Zine Scene" is a history of Richmond's alternative print media from 1960 to 1989. My book "Independent Press in DC and Virginia: An Underground History," is a history of the alternative and underground press in Virginia and the District of Columbia from 1965-1972. Both books were nominated for Library of Virginia Literary Awards in Nonfiction. My book "Virginia State Penitentiary: A Notorious History" was published Oct. 30, 2017 and can be ordered at online sellers and Chopsuey.com. My comic novels "Naked Savages" and "Theme Park Babylon" were both released in 2019, and my 11th book, "Railroaded" is the true stories of the first 100 electric chair executions in Virginia, from 1908 to 1920. My latest book is "Closing the Slaughterhouse: The Inside Story of Death Penalty Abolition in Virginia." It chronicles all 413 years of Virginia's death penalty, and how a small group of abolitionists ended it. I am an arts features writer and opinion contributor to Richmond’s Style Weekly, Richmond Magazine, Staunton News Leader & North of the James magazine, and have won many awards with the Virginia Press Association & the Association of Alternative Newsmedia. I have also been nominated for a Pushcart Prize for my short story "Death Row Report," published in the Rappahannock Review, and am nominated for two Literary awards by the Library of Virginia. In 2021 I received the Frederick Douglass Award for Human Rights from the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta for my work abolishing Virginia's death penalty. I have also served at Strayer University in Virginia as an adjunct professor of English, and sporadically teach a course on the death penalty or on the alternative press at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Virginia. I live in Doswell, Virginia with my wife Susan. My website is www.dalebrumfield.net.
