However, after dismantling and ‘nearly’ rebuilding the family mower at age 12 I’m amazed Dad allowed me to survive to college. As an engineer, I developed superconducting wire, wrote code to model impurities in light bulb filaments, programmed high temp vacuum furnaces to produce x-ray tubes, and improved quality of manmade diamond (yes, it’s a real thing; looks great machining aluminum; not so great on your finger). I also wanted to understand business. Time to go back to school. With an MBA and Master of Engineering Mgt I joined one of the coolest companies on the planet. I supervised a three-shift dynamometer lab, built an engineering department responsible for plant and field quality, lived in Germany leading a powertrain development project with Porsche (including daily 100+mph Autobahn commutes in a 911), implemented a first-for-Harley Product Cost department… Still with me? Here’s where the Finance transition happens. My Product Cost team of Engineers and Analysts collaborated with designers and program management on new product business cases and exposed me to finance. When I asked the CFO for a corporate finance role he said “get a CPA and I’ll take you seriously”. Time to go back to school. Looking for an efficient and effective way to reach my goal I gathered a Master of Accounting (extra fun when my 4th child joined the team) and made sure to pass each section of the CPA on the first try. With CPA in hand the CFO had no choice but to let me play finance. For 12 years I was privileged to lead Senior Leadership through annual budgeting and multi-year strategic planning processes, develop financial scenarios to guide leadership decisions, work with business partners (Parts&Accessories, General Merchandise, Harley Owners Group, Museum, Sales, Marketing, Information Technology, Transportation) on daily operations and long-term investments, lead the monthly Close and Forecasting processes, and provide executive and Board reporting. I am not intimidated by technical or interpersonal challenges I lead by example with high integrity, a strong work ethic, and a passion for business I don’t care about titles, or turf; I care about gathering experts from all levels and functions to solve problems I drive accountability by respecting the individual: praise in public, critique in private I believe in humility and know that asking for help leads to stronger teams and stronger results I love to learn.
