Daniela Tulone’s Expertise I'm an accomplished forward-thinking computer scientist and entrepreneur, focusing on the intersection of AI and Sustainability. Recognized for pioneering work in AI Sustainability by design, edge intelligence, and AI-IoT monitoring for water and electric grids, I’m passionately dedicated to shaping AI into an effective, people-centered tool to address societal and climate issues while fostering sustainable and inclusive growth. To tackle complex sustainability issues and facilitate collective progress, I operate at the nexus of academia, business, and policy. Drawing from my research at MIT and other research centers, policy work at the European Commission and UN International Telecommunication unit (ITU), accomplishments as a startup founder and corporate lab leader, and a well-rounded skill set (e.g., Ph.D. Computer Science, M.S. Math, Executive MBA), I bring a comprehensive perspective that uniquely blends scientific rigor with business acumen and a human-centric, creative, and inclusive approach. My work focuses on two complementary and interlinked areas: AI solutions for UN SDGs (e.g., climate adaptation, water and energy management), and AI Sustainability. Since 2020, I’ve championed “AI Sustainability by Design”, which integrates into AI models and algorithms environmental, social, and economic sustainability considerations along with AI ethical principles, while evaluating system sustainability impacts. This comprehensive design approach holds high potential for enhancing benefits, while minimizing AI risks and costs. Key contributions to this emerging area include on-going design tools enabling practitioners to build sustainable AI systems and ITU standardization work on the sustainability by design of AI and Metaverse systems stemming from two ITU interdisciplinary expert groups I launched and chaired. +25 Innovation Projects − 19 Grant Awards & Recognitions − 35 Peer-Reviewed Publications www.ecosurge.tech
