Darren Ashmore’s Expertise Professionally I am fascinated by the negotiated nature of reality, and the ways in which groups form around specific frames of reference in the pursuit of the security of community. In practical terms however, I use traditional Japanese performing art and Japanese cultural trends (both elite and popular) to explore this issue. All this translates into watching industrial amounts of anime and old Japanese films/plays, whilst ranting at students (who do seem rapt to be sure) on the virtues of variable mobile suits, the works of Ichikawa Danjuro, large flying submarines, Miko, and robots which program themselves to get bigger (then smaller). If it all sounds a little strange for a professional anthropologist - it is. However, sheep get like Shepherd and Shepherd get like sheep: though it is quicker and closer with culture and anthropologists (you should see the office. If you can avoid the train-set and the 6 foot RX-78-2 Gundam, you might be able to see me buried under a mountain of Super Dollfies). As a teacher, I enjoy running introduction courses to my areas (Anthropology, Japanese Culture, Japanese Theatre, Film and Japanese Art) with my own views of social negotiation and symbolic action in mind - opening the students up to a variety of analytical positions, in order to get them to rethink their own cultural perceptions and perspectives. In publication I also focus on the unusual and fringe, and have written on areas such as feminism in traditional Japanese theatre, manga as a mirror of the salaryman and disease control using puppets in Nishinomiya. My current goal is to help establish AIU as an important centre for cultural studies (especially minority and 'invisible culture' issues) in Japan, the hub of a Tohoku Film Festival, and the heart of the social revival which this region so desperately needs. Specialties: Japanese language - modern and classical: - Translation. - Interpretation. Japanese Popular Culture Movements. - 'Classical Pop' (Kamakura Performance arts) - Edo Popular Culture and the creation of Theatre Icons. - Hokusai and Manga. - Throw-away Rag: Punch Japan. - Uncommon Folk: The Survival and Revival of Folk Puppet Art in Japan.
