David Daniels’s Expertise David Daniels graduated from the University of Manchester in 1970 with an Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering followed later by a MSc in Physics with Distinction. David's research and development interest are in sensors for security and counter-terrorism in particular millimetre wave and sub millimetre wave radar systems, short-range UWB radar, IR image processing, magnetics and acoustics. The development of ground penetrating radar in the 1990's for forensic applications achieved notable success in support of the police investigations in the Frederick West and Marc Dutroux cases, where radar systems located the buried remains of the victims. David lead the development of radar for landmine detection, including programmes for humanitarian demining with trials in Cambodia, Bosnia and Angola with the technology achieving a 90% reduction in FAR in Cambodia. The GPR technology made a major impact on behalf of NATO forces in countering the threat from buried IEDs. David has published over 110 technical papers and two books on ground penetrating radar (one awarded the IEE Rayleigh Book Award) as well as contributing to a number of seminal reference books in the field, including a contribution to Skolnik’s Radar Handbook 3rd Edition. He also recently authored “EM detection of concealed targets”, which describes detection techniques from NQR through to sub millimetre wave radar. In June 2012 David was appointed CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. In 2015 David joined the University of Manchester as a Visiting Professor. Currently Editor for NSG and Sensing and Imaging and referee for the EPSRC, IoP, IET Electronics Letters, IET Procs, IEEE TGRS, IEEE IGARSS, Optical Engineering. Invited papers for IEEE CAMA 2014, IWAGPR 2013, Int. Conf. on Radar (IEE Radar series), IEE Mine Detection, SSTA, GPR 2000/8, PIERS, SPIE Conferences on Defence and Security 2004, 2005, NDRF, NATO workshops . Ind. advisor to the UK DSAC for six years David gained his EASA Private Pilot’s Licence in 2012, the IR(R) rating in 2014 and the Night rating in 2020 and has 450 hours flight experience . He became a Governor of the independent Battle Abbey School in 2018 was President of Horsham and Batlle Rotary Clubs as well as Wine Society
