Throughout a 30-year career, I have been an advocate of wider availability of theranostics and maintenance of high clinical standards. Safe and effective practice of theranostics requires close cooperation with other specialists and facilities to deliver high-level care for often frail patients, supported by experienced staff. This has been made clear in recent position statements and guidance from regulatory and professional bodies. Icon Cancer Centre North Lakes has the staff and infrastructure needed by these patients. Structured research is a key driver in development and translation of theranostics from concept to funded clinical reality. This became clear during development of Brisbane’s public hospital theranostics program and Queensland’s Specialised Positron Emission Tomography Service, and as clinical lead in establishment of the Herston Imaging Research Facility - purpose-built imaging research facility with access to multiple modalities and advanced instrumentation. I am privileged to have participated in early and late phase trials with distinguished colleagues both in nuclear medicine and other disciplines.
