David Macfarlane’s Expertise I am an experienced nuclear medicine physician at Icon Cancer Centre North Lakes and Lumus Imaging St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside. My career in Nuclear Medicine – and enduring interest in molecular imaging and radiopharmaceutical therapy – began with specialist training in Nuclear Medicine at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and University of Michigan. I am a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and Australasian Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists (AANMS). I also hold an adjunct Associate Professor position at the University of Queensland’s School of Clinical Medicine and serve on several professional committees and as scientific adviser. I participate in oncology imaging at Lumus Imaging, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, equipped with the GE Omni PET/CT. I am pleased to have recently joined the Icon team, where I am coordinating the newly established theranostics service at Icon Cancer Centre North Lakes. I look forward to working again with colleagues in Brisbane and South East Queensland. Initially, referrals are welcomed for patients considered potential candidates for Lutetium-177 and Actinium-225 labelled agents for prostate cancer (PSMA targeted) and selected neuroendocrine malignancies (DOTATATE). Throughout a 30-year career, I have been an advocate of wider availability of theranostics and maintenance of high clinical standards. Safe and effective practice of theranostics requires close cooperation with other specialists and facilities to deliver high-level care for often frail patients, supported by experienced staff. This has been made clear in recent position statements and guidance from regulatory and professional bodies. Icon Cancer Centre North Lakes has the staff and infrastructure needed by these patients. Structured research is a key driver in development and translation of theranostics from concept to funded clinical reality. This became clear during development of Brisbane’s public hospital theranostics program and Queensland’s Specialised Positron Emission Tomography Service, and as clinical lead in establishment of the Herston Imaging Research Facility - purpose-built imaging research facility with access to multiple modalities and advanced instrumentation. I am privileged to have participated in early and late phase trials with distinguished colleagues both in nuclear medicine and other disciplines. Planning for introduction of research trials using radiopharmaceuticals alone and in combination with other modalities is well advanced.
