David Place’s Expertise Director of Music SHREWSBURY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL RIVERSIDE BANGKOK August 2017 - Present At Shrewsbury, the music department has a fantastic reputation that far precedes my time at the helm. We have a large staff of academic and instrumental/vocal teachers. I lead the department and line-manage our four Heads of Studio, 30+ visiting instrumental/vocal teachers, an admin team, technician and music gap student. We provide music classes (EY1-Y13), choir school, band class, extra-curricular ensembles, instrumental/vocal lessons (over 1000 30-minute lessons each week pre-pandemic), to our 1990 students. We also have a music scholar programme with some of the most extraordinary young musicians I have ever known. In addition to my teaching responsibilities (A’level and Y3+4 Orchestra programme), I find myself often in meetings with parents, SMT, music staff, etc or at the front of our symphony orchestra or planning our next concert. Most notably, I have designed and led the last six of our annual Last Night of the Proms style Gala performances. As a departmental manager, chief amongst the challenges before me is maintaining a productive and positive environment for staff and students alike. The passions and peccadillos of extraordinarily skilled musicians can be a handful and demand both diplomacy and high amounts of patience, perseverance and gentle humour. I work on the premise that a happy team is an effective team. Music is an emotive art form and it is my firm belief that serious and formal music-making, if done right, is properly ‘fun’ and everyone should be smiling at the end! This same principle can be applied to any challenging endeavour. Programme Leader (Music and Dramatic Arts) and Head of Music SHREWSBURY SIXTH FORM COLLEGE (now part of Shrewsbury Colleges Group) 1996-2013 / 2013-2017 I was faculty head for performing arts and managed the music department, the drama department and the extensive extra-curricular music and drama programme. In addition to conducting and rehearsing choirs, orchestras, big bands, and coaching many smaller groups, I also produced three musicals (the Addams Family, Evita, Cabaret) and assisted with the musical direction of many more. I also taught A’level Music. When I started at SSFC in 1996, there were four students in total on the music A’level course (both years). By the time I left, we had nearly 70 students taking A’level music and were one of the largest centres in the UK for pure Music A’level entry.
