He spent a decade on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in the Biochemistry and Biophysics Department, where at that time he was selected for the Eli Lilly Award in Biological Chemistry, sponsored by the American Chemical Society. After moving to Duke University in 2006, Prof. McCafferty has developed new research programs in histone demethylation, chlamydial pathogenesis, mechanistic enzymology of natural product biosynthesis and natural product mechanism of action. Prof. McCafferty has 16+ years experience in mechanistic enzymology, epigenetics, construction of synthetic chromatin templates, synthetic organic and peptide chemistry, protein design, protein biophysics and most recently macromolecular protein crystallography.
