After qualifying in the F/A-18 Hornet, Dirk deployed throughout the Arabian Gulf/Sea aboard the USS Nimitz in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition to his flying role, he also served as a Landing Signal Officer responsible for the safe and expeditious recovery of aircraft to the carrier. Dirk’s leadership, and tactical flying skills made him an excellent candidate for United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), an honor that he holds with great pride to this day. Following the successful completion of this rigorous 10-week training program, Dirk took on the role of overseeing large scale training exercises, and syllabus development/implementation supporting all F/A-18 squadrons along the Eastern seaboard. Additionally, he led ground school courses teaching tactical flying techniques, and weapons defense maneuvers/procedures to 100+ Naval Aviators. Since then, Dirk has held roles as a Director of Maintenance, Safety, and Operations. In each role he provided outstanding leadership to personnel, while exercising oversight for multi-million-dollar budgets. Commonly, he works across departments to solve complex problems, create efficiencies, and reduce costs. He utilizes his operational foresight and deep technical knowledge to mitigate hazards and enhance safety. Outside of the cockpit, Dirk is a life-long learner and family man. He enjoys running, visiting national parks, and coaching his son’s T-ball team.
