In 1990 he was one of the three founders of H+N+S Landscape-architects. Within the bureau he is mainly responsible for the regional plans. In 2002 Dirk Sijmons received the Rotterdam-Maaskant award for his contribution to landscape theory and his role in the national debate. To this occasion his book Landkaartmos was published. Other books by Sijmons are Oorden van Onthouding (1998, about nature and design), =Landschap (1998, about landscape design on a regional scale). This book was published in English as =Landscape in 2002. In 2006 his book Een plan dat werkt (a plan that works, about policymaking and design) was published. Sijmons was appointed State Landscape Architect of the Netherlands for the period 2004-2008. This new appointment was meant to advise the Dutch government on landscape matters. His latest publication is Greetings from Europe, a book addressing Leisure & Landscape in Europe is the result of a European wide initiative he took as a State advisor. Some thirty universities from twenty European countries entered in this project. He received the prestigious Edgar Doncker-award for his contribution to Dutch culture in 2007. In 2008 he was appointed as a professor on Environmental Design at the TU-Delft. From October 2011 Sijmons is appointed on the chair of Landscape Architecture at the same University.
