Even with my conscious knowledge of the unconscious nervous system, what I didn't anticipate was how the compounded stress of that volatile time would affect me not only mentally but physically --- resulting in stress-induced anaphylactic shock the weekend I published. What started as itchy palms quickly progressed to lumps, bumps, and skin irritation all over my body. When I developed a soar throat the next day, my husband took me to Urgent Care where I was immediately admitted to receive a shot of adrenaline (i.e. "epi- pen") and an oral corticosteroid (both being stress hormones that impact immune response). At my follow-up medical appointment, I was officially diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and prescribed an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) --- not by a mental healthcare provider, mind you, but a general practitioner (since my health insurance didn't cover mental healthcare). While a serious health scare, it was also a critical example I now use to reinforce the very real interconnectedness of our neurology and physiology, and how detrimentally upside-down and behind our healthcare system is in fully understanding and caring for all human parts; because when we don't properly care for one, it naturally impacts every other. To increase equity, access, and affordability of mental fitness services, I founded MentalFitness4All in 2023 as a 501(c)3 partner program to provide reduced-cost mental fitness training for income-eligible individuals and organizations. 4d Fit Mental Fitness
