Dr. Mahesh Varpe’s Expertise Research Work: 4 year (Jan 2010 – Dec 2014) 3D Endwall Contouring in a Low Speed Axial Flow Compressor Cascade • A Reliable CFD Modeling of a Low Speed Axial Flow Compressor Cascade Different operating conditions considered are shrouded blades, a range of tip clearance, variation in incidence angle, endwall motion and inlet disturbance. CFD is verified as a valuable analysis tool to probe into the complex flow physics, where conventional methods in experimentation are unable to provide. The insight provided helped in the formulation of the techniques to improve the performance, compactness and reduce the overall cost • Optimization of the Blade Camber Angle • Design and Experimentation on Shear Flow Generators to Simulate Inflow Disturbance • CFD Modeling of Relative Motion between the Blades and the Endwall • Development of Genetic Optimization Algorithm Based on Evolutionary Principle • Automated Improvement in the Quality of the Computational Grid • Automated Design Cycle using GAMBIT and FLUENT through scripting in EXCEL-VBA • Fabrication and Experimentation on 3D Contoured Hub Cascade with the optimized hub is carefully planned and fabricated to have reduced handling during the assembly and mounting it in the test section. CFD analysis predicted a reduction of 41 % in the total pressure loss with other complementary benefits from the optimized endwall. Experimentation on the same has also shown similar gains. Although the contoured hub is designed for near stall condition, it improves the performance over a wide range of incidence angle. The detailed analysis confirms that contoured hub acts as vortex generator in addition to modifier of transverse pressure gradient. The endwall contouring is extended to the casing side as well which has further improved the total pressure loss reduction by 6%. Similar implementation towards injection and suction flow control is being conceived.
