  I've always wanted to work in healthcare but it wasn't until I joined the United States Navy where I found my calling of working in the laboratory. I initially joined to become a Hospital Corpsman and upon graduating that schooling, I was chosen to attend the Medical Laboratory Technician school. I found that I had the most enjoyment working in the laboratory being a detective, as I like to compare it, to figure out how to troubleshoot equipment or why a patients results are what they are. I personally have a curiosity when it come to blood bank because it tends to make you think outside of the box when trying to figure out what type of antibodies a patient has and trying to find them the perfect match. I didn't find I loved that part of the lab until I had gotten a part-time job in a blood bank at Baltimore-Washington Medical Center where I met great people who were very knowledgable in that area and taught me much of what I know today. I also had a great time training the MLT students that would rotate through my military lab and sharing the knowledge I had with them as well as training various staff members on proper laboratory techniques when doing blood draws or CLIA-waived tests. I really feel I found a career I enjoy and although not many know of my job field I still find satisfaction in knowing that I am helping doctors diagnose patients. This job has become a real passion for myself, and I want to continuing learning everything I can in my field, while also sharing my knowledge and experience with others. Texas Health Resources
