Emily Taranto’s Expertise I am a very hardworking and passionate engineer who graduated from UMass Lowell in May 2021 with an undergraduate degree in Plastics Engineering. During my time at UMass Lowell, I took many classes studying the behavior and chemical structures of polymers. I completed two polymer science labs and four labs working with plastics processing equipment. I also took several classes focusing on material properties of polymers such as additives, polymer blends, and plastics & the environment. I have a particular interest in working on sustainability and how, as an engineer, I can try to improve the relationship between plastics and the environment. I believe that these two things do not need to be an ultimatum- plastics are very important to the world for numerous reasons, however, they have no place at the bottom of our oceans or littered along the side of the road. It is important to focus on how to reduce plastics when possible, make them more recyclable and biodegradable, and to spend time on effective waste collection systems with respect to plastic.
