Emma Laws’s Expertise A Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum for over 20 years, and an Associate of both the Museums Association and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, I have extensive experience across the museum, library and archive sectors and serve on the committees of several professional heritage organisations. Following my first role at the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, I managed the V&A’s Beatrix Potter Collection (ca. 5,000 drawings and manuscripts) and collections of over 100,000 children’s books dating from the 16th century. My V&A career culminated in co-curating the international touring exhibition, 'Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic' (9 Dec. 2017 - 8 Apr. 2018), and co-authoring the accompanying book (V&A Publishing, 2017). Since relocating to Devon, I have continued to work for the V&A as an author for ‘Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature’ (V&A Publishing, 2021; exhibition opened in February 2022), and for the National Trust as a freelance cataloguer. As Director of Collections and Research at the Devon and Exeter Institution from October 2019 to December 2021, I initiated major strategic changes in collections management, access and user services, secured follow-on grant funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation for the DEI’s digitisation project, and designed an innovative methodology for a major Heritage Lottery funded Collections Review. In January 2022, I moved to a permanent position as Exeter Cathedral Librarian. I continue to work as a consultant for the DEI and as a Trustee of Topsham Museum. My skills include: - Collaborative and creative project management, curating world-class exhibitions. - Exhibition design and interpretation. - Research and writing. - Mentoring and training. - Lecturing and teaching (primary, secondary and further education). - Managing stakeholder and professional relationships, staff and volunteers. - Writing successful grant applications. - Public service, reference work and enquiries. - Events organisation. - Collections management: writing policies and guidelines, cataloguing (rare books, drawings and archives), managing acquisitions and loans, and liaising with conservation experts to store, preserve and conserve collections. - Marketing and promoting in mainstream media channels and social media. - Working individually and as part of a team to tight budgets and deadlines in a highly pressured creative environment. - Administrative / IT skills, including Microsoft Office, content management systems and maintaining professional websites: SharePoint, Drupal and YM.
