Erik Lubberts’s Expertise Erik Lubberts is an associate professor Immuno-Pathobiology of Inflammatory Arthritis at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam and head of the Research Laboratory of Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases at the Department of Rheumatology. His research interest is Immunity and Pathobiology of inflammatory arthritis. His research laboratory is internationally recognized for its translational research on the IL-23-IL-17 immune pathway in inflammatory arthritis. Next to studies on IL-17 biology, Th17 cytokines, Th17 heterogeneity and plasticity in autoimmune and auto inflammatory diseases with focus on joint, skin and gut, the Lubberts laboratory focuses on osteoimmunology and the interaction between lymphocytes and mesenchymal/stromal cells. In this context, both human material and in vivo mouse models for autoimmune arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis and SLE are used to study the contribution of the IL-23-IL-17 immune pathway in tissue inflammation/destruction and remodeling. He has made important contributions to IL-17 biology in arthritis, the identification of pathogenic Th17 cell populations in autoimmune disorders and the development of therapies for inflammatory arthritis.
