Fernando Davila’s Expertise Professional engineer with 20 years of experience in the Steel Construction Industry with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, as well as a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering and a Master’s degree in Project Management. Licensed Professional Engineer in Canada in the provinces of Alberta and Quebec. With a steel contractor’s background, I possess an in-depth technical expertise in steel construction, including structural design, connection design, dynamics, fatigue, welding, fabrication and erection practices and inspections. Well versed in both Canadian and American construction codes and regulations, and certified Welding Engineer by the Canadian Welding Bureau. Also hold safety training certificates on CSTS-09, WHMIS (Aug 2016) and Fall Protection (June 2018) required to conduct inspections at heights. Worked in full-time positions and consulting engagements in both domestic and international projects, mainly heavy industrial. As an experienced Constructability reviewer, I propose a highly proactive Construction-Driven Design approach which has proven to result in important capital and critical path schedule savings by conducting Constructability reviews and Connection Design early at the planning-design stage. To a large extend, the economy of a structural steel project lays on the difficulty involved in fabrication and erection. While materials account for about 30%, labour goes on more than 60%. Clearly then, project economy is maximized when the designs are configured to simplify the labour associated to fabrication and erection, which relies directly upon the connection details. I offer over 15 years of direct experience designing steel structures and connections for a wide variety of projects, from heavy industrial to commercial, seismic and non-seismic, bolted and welded joints, successfully turning thousands of tons of structural steel into fabrication and erection. Experienced bringing cost savings in the rage of 10 to 20% and schedule reductions up to 30% when allowed to implement true Constructability (often mistaken by Value Engineering) and connection design early at the planning-design stage.
