Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani’s Expertise Dr. Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani is author of "The Cities We Need: Essential Stories of Everyday Places" (forthcoming August 2024 from MIT Press), an expressive book of prose and photographs that reveals the powerful ways our everyday places support our shared belonging. Her first book, "Contested City: Art & Public History as Mediation at New York's Seward Park Urban Renewal Area" (University of Iowa Press 2019) focuses on the intersections between community, urbanism, and visual practices, revealing the untold stories of fifty years of activism at a failed urban renewal site on New York's Lower East Side and shedding light on the importance of collaborative creative public projects for fostering dialogue in divided neighborhoods. Gabrielle is an urbanist, educator, photographer and curator and is co-founder of Buscada, an interdisciplinary practice on place and dialogue. She was the 2017 Post-doctoral Fellow in Visual Culture and Social Justice at the International Center of Photography and was professor of Urban Studies and Arts & Social Engagement at The New School for over a decade. She was previously Associate Director of Civic Engagement Initiatives at the New School and a fellow at the Centre for Urban and Community Research, Goldsmiths, London. Gabrielle holds a doctorate in Environmental Psychology from the Graduate Center, CUNY and her research and practice addresses the experience and politics of everyday place. Her artwork has been exhibited with institutions including the Center for Architecture, MIT, Creative Time, and the Sheila Johnson Design Center; her scholarship appears in journals including Visual Studies, Society & Space, Space & Culture, Radical History Review, Shelterforce, Urban Omnibus and Places. Specialties: photography, built environment, urban studies, design, exhibitions, research, environmental psychology, everyday life, place attachment, curatorial practice, visual culture, ethnography
