Grant Daniels’s Expertise When I was a kid I wanted to be a garbageman. Failing that, my backup was to become a naturalist. Thus far I've managed to succeed at the latter. After starting my consulting career as a self-employed freelancer, I started work at North Barker as a senior ecologist and earned a path to partnership in the company within three years, officially becoming a director and principal ecologist two years later and managing director the following year. Our clients value my ability to combine efficiency with quality and consequently produce consistently excellent results within rapid time frames. My skills as a field ecologist, in particular in relation to flora and vertebrate fauna, are well respected by peers many years my senior, while as a writer I have the ability to communicate results and concepts fluently to both scientific and non-scientific audiences. Prior to becoming a consultant I worked and studied at UTAS as a researcher in urban ecology. Through a series of novel and innovative projects my collaborators and I made a meaningful contribution to the field of reconciliation ecology. We emphasised the need to expand nature conservation beyond reservation and restoration ecology to a less dichotomous framework that melds human habitation and business with sustainable levels of biodiversity preservation. There is simply not enough space on Earth for humans and non-humans to occupy opposite sides of the fence. Unlike many of my peers I am not obsessed with naturalness; I believe in preserving nature wherever it occurs, not just where it seems natural. In my experience this includes eastern barred bandicoots in veggie patches, Tasmanian devils in basements, Egyptian slit-faced bats in toilet blocks, and threatened Brazilian wildflowers in my bedroom.
