Further structural studies via high resolution single particle and cryo electron microscopy techniques will be performed. 2010-20170531: Molecular structure, packing and release of gelforming mucins with relevance to Cystic fibrosis In many diseases, such as different inflammations in the airways and intestine, the expression of mucins is altered. In CF an extremely viscous fluid is built up. Understanding the N-terminal calcium and pH dependent mechanisms of packing and secretion of mucins may be helpful in designing novel therapeutics. Collaborators: Gunnar C. Hansson mucin biology group, University of Gothenburg, Sweden; the group of Hans Hebert, Karolinska Institutet (KI) and School of Technology and Health, Royal Institute of Technology, Huddinge, Sweden, Novel 3D electron density maps were recently obtained for all gel forming mucins.
