Heena Brahmbhatt’s Expertise I have spent over 20 years leading studies on HIV prevention studies in sub-Saharan Africa (Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa) and Asia (India, China and Pakistan) which included examining risk factors for MTCT and child mortality; long-term trajectory of survival of infants born to HIV+ mothers; and co-infection of HIV and placental malaria on MTCT and birth outcomes. Upon completion of my PhD, my career development award (K-award) focused on assessing the impact of HIV/AIDS and ART on the long term morbidity, mortality, growth and development, and neurodevelopmental outcomes. I then led a NIH funded study assessing fertility desires, reproductive health outcomes and contraceptive use among HIV negative and positive concordant and serodiscordant couples in Rakai, Uganda. Similar work in Ethiopia was focused on evaluating the integration of family planning services into existing voluntary counseling and testing HIV centers and assessing the impact of this integration of services on contraceptive use rates, and high risk behaviors. Since 2010, I have led research studies on HIV prevention among adolescents in South Africa. As the USAID co-deputy director for Research to Prevention, our team oversaw over 30 HIV prevention studies in 18 countries and I was the principle investigator on studies in Botswana and South Africa: I led a randomized pilot study assessing the feasibility and acceptability of a cash transfer program in South Africa. This study assessed also risk factors of HIV and STIs among adolescents and led to a RO1 of which I am the US PI on a RO1 titled “Injectable Contraception and HIV/HSV-2 Incidence in Young South African Women.” Leading multiple longitudinal HIV prevention studies on children and adolescents in South Africa has led to collaborative efforts with colleagues in South Africa where we are exploring comprehensive efforts to reduce the severe burden of HIV and TB in this setting. This has led to another RO1 "Active Case Finding Testing and Linkage to Treatment and Improved Survival (ACTTIS) Study" in South Africa. Consultant: UNAIDS/UNFPA-South Africa: (i) Reference report on impact of HIV on child survival, (ii)Evaluated integrated service model for HIV in Namibia and wrote report and manuscripts for scientific journals, (iii) Designed, implemented and analyzed data for assessment of integrated HIV services in Botswana (iv) UNAIDS international consultant to write HIV Epidemic Profile Report for Indian Ocean Countries (IOC) and SADC countries
