Since 2010, I have led research studies on HIV prevention among adolescents in South Africa. As the USAID co-deputy director for Research to Prevention, our team oversaw over 30 HIV prevention studies in 18 countries and I was the principle investigator on studies in Botswana and South Africa: I led a randomized pilot study assessing the feasibility and acceptability of a cash transfer program in South Africa. This study assessed also risk factors of HIV and STIs among adolescents and led to a RO1 of which I am the US PI on a RO1 titled “Injectable Contraception and HIV/HSV-2 Incidence in Young South African Women.” Leading multiple longitudinal HIV prevention studies on children and adolescents in South Africa has led to collaborative efforts with colleagues in South Africa where we are exploring comprehensive efforts to reduce the severe burden of HIV and TB in this setting. This has led to another RO1 "Active Case Finding Testing and Linkage to Treatment and Improved Survival (ACTTIS) Study" in South Africa.
