Hemal Naik hmnaik@att.net & | I work at the intersection of computer science, wildlife ecology, and art. I have a decade's worth of experience in developing specialized computer vision applications. My research has contributed to both applied and fundamental research. I started working in the healthcare industry and then moved to industrial manufacturing before moving to a unique and challenging field of animal behavior. Since 2017, I have worked with biologists to design computer vision solutions suitable for conducting long-term behavior studies with wild animals using quantitative methods. My specialty is developing novel solutions for 2D-3D tracking with stereo or monocular cameras. I started off working on 3D tracking for AR-VR applications in healthcare and automotive manufacturing. Later, I modified the same techniques used in the industry to build one of the largest 3D tracking facilities for insects, birds, and mammals. Currently, I am developing two novel technologies with collaborations. 1. 3D tracking of bird groups in the wild with a multi-camera setup. 2. Large-scale tracking of 100+ mammals in grasslands for up to 90 minutes with 3 simultaneously flying UAVs. My goal is to make technology for large-scale monitoring of wildlife and studying their behavior. I also work with institutes like Akademie Schloss Solitude and Merz Akademie to blend art and science. I am an art fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude and currently doing my art project "Encounters with the Wild" as part of a collaboration between ASS and MPI-AB. I have been involved in more than 15 student projects and worked with many independent artists.
