  From the beginning of my studies, I had a strong interest in Structures and Building Materials. As a result, I opted for the structural engineering stream of my degree program. I completed my dissertation, entitled “Study and Improvement of Industrial Pavements” with excellent performance. I investigated the use of industrial by-products in the production of concrete for industrial pavements with the purpose of improving their properties, especially strength and wear resistance. After one-year practice in a construction company, I was accepted for masters on Structural engineering at Imperial College of London. I completed several courses on subjects related to civil engineering design with an excellent performance in the exams and I successfully passed the final project “Detailed Design of a High Rise Steel Building”. Afterwards I had the opportunity to apply my knowledge in practice working in a construction company for two years as a site supervisor and project manager. Finally, I successfully applied for a PhD research at National Technical University of Athens. I was also accepted as a scholar by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) after applying for “Fellowships of Excellence for Postgraduate Studies in Greece-Siemens Program”. As a result, I started working on advanced beam models and comparing them to solid and plate ones. One aspect that attracted my interest after my first modelling approaches was the efficiency of the numerical methods I was employing, especially for curved geometries. Thus, I embarked on an investigation of the modern Isogeometric Analysis with the purpose of improving the methods I was already using. This enabled a more interactive approach between geometry and analysis and more accurate results were obtained by diminishing the geometry approximation error. In order to pursue my interests further, with a view to pursue an academic career in engineering, I decided to keep on working towards expanding my research area of expertise.
