James Cumbo’s Expertise I take pride in how I manage my time. Time is valuable, and it’s something that we can never get back, so the way we spend each minute is crucial. We hear all the time that there are not enough hours in the day, or the timing isn’t right. There is no “right time”. There is time, and what you choose to do with it. I've found myself balancing multiple, unique projects simultaneously throughout my young professional career. In my undergraduate years at North Carolina State, I quickly found myself involved in several extracurricular activities such as the accounting society, finance club, working at the University’s rec center, volunteering with Special Olympics, and serving as a teaching assistant for the introductory business course. Outside of campus, I interned each morning before my classes began to gain more professional hands-on experience. These distinct activities quickly surrounded me with a diverse network and allowed me to take bits and pieces from each position to prioritize what I enjoy in life. One year into full-time employment, I started my master’s degree online at the University of Missouri. I chose to complete my degree at a part-time pace over 2 years rather than 1 to continue working my normal 40+ hour weeks as a financial analyst. I began CPA exam prep at the tail-end of my schooling, which required more discipline than ever before. Although stressful at times, I strongly believe that I benefitted from working at the same time as completing coursework and reviewing for the CPA exam because I could draw similarities and find examples in the workplace that parallel the information from the classroom and textbooks. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t overwhelmed at times, but I chose this route and knew it wouldn’t be easy. If it was easy, everyone would do it, right? I mentioned the many professional activities that I’d juggle at once, but I always make sure to allot time for recreation and pleasure. I always say that I work hard to play harder, so I take my weekends and PTO time serious because I think that’s the most important aspect to a happy, balanced life. I never want to be at a point in life where I am too focused on making a living that I forget to have a life.
