  The focus of my research program is to investigate cellular mechanisms of toxicity of environmental chemicals and known therapeutics. Specifically, my laboratory studies the impact that environmental chemicals, like the fungicide maneb, has on the initiation and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Of great interest to the laboratory is Down syndrome (DS) and the mechanisms that render these individuals susceptible to developing a variety of comorbidities, like early onset Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, leukemia, and cognitive dysfunction. We believe that proteostasis dysfunction is a major factor that contributes to these comorbidities observed DS as well as other neurodegenerative diseases. To study these conditions, we routinely utilize basic cell biology techniques, systems biology approaches, and in vitro, in vivo, and stem cell based models.
