Jane Palmer’s Expertise My research and project work bring together my professional knowledge and experience with the ethnographic approaches I developed and theorised in my doctorate. In delivering housing projects to Indigenous communities in Northern Australia, in research projects with rural Acehnese in Indonesia and the low income rental sector in regional Australia, in working with Aboriginal organisations in South West Queensland on conservation of cultural heritage, and in managing the development of occupational health and safety strategies and standards for the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, I have forged a strong understanding of the importance of effective project delivery and the need for ‘deep data’ to evaluate and improve project design and processes. My academic qualifications likewise cover both practical and theoretical issues relevant to project effectiveness, within a transdisciplinary matrix including building and environmental sciences and a diverse range of social sciences and humanities. I have published and presented at conferences on assessment and ethical issues in working with vulnerable populations, and believe that more effective assessment, evaluation and reflection would contribute to better delivery of projects in areas as diverse as climate change, cultural heritage, disaster prevention and recovery, education, housing, health and governance.
