  My research interests lie mainly in early modern British history, but I am also interested in early modern Europe and its encounters with the Americas, as well as twentieth-century Ireland. My current research investigates the culture, production and dissemination of sixteenth-century ballads, especially as evidence of news media and a proto-public sphere. My doctoral thesis investigated the ballads of the mid-Tudor crisis in their musical, historical and literary contexts, examining them as evidence for religious and political as well as cultural history. It argued that ballads were part of an oral culture, intended to be performed as well as read, and that they reflect the concerns of both the elite and the populace about issues as wide ranging as female monarchy, the Reformation, economics, the English commonwealth and news. In 2018, I published a revised and expanded version of my thesis as Singing the News: Ballads in Mid-Tudor England. My academic articles include a study of balladeers’ responses to the accessions of Mary I, Elizabeth I and James I, as well as an examination of music in Tudor cheap print. My latest book is a critical edition of a seventeenth century ‘jig’ from Lancashire, which we are performing this summer in Brindle, the village where it was written. I am the co-author of a forthcoming Cambridge Elements book on Communicating the News in Early Modern Europe (CUP). I have published popular articles on the Spanish conquest of Mexico, on Mary I, and on the local history of Bolton, which I discussed on the Bolton episode of John Stapleton's History of Greater Manchester for BBC Radio Manchester in April 2011. I was music advisor to the BBC’s Great History Quiz: the Tudors. I am a Trustee of the Historical Association, sitting on the Higher Education Committee. I have spoken to H.A. branches and sixth form history societies and am on the H.A. list of speakers. I am a Fellow of the Historical Association and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. I am a qualified secondary music teacher with experience of curriculum development and departmental management.
