Previously I headed a news team on a BBC local radio station and prior to that enjoyed several decades in newspaper journalism, including holding the posts of deputy editor and that of editor. I specialised in crime and defence reporting, covering assignments in various parts of the world including Afghanistan, Kosovo, Bosnia, Northern Ireland, The Falkland Islands, Hong Kong, Canada, Belize and Jamaica. Away from professional journalism I served as Chair of the Prince’s Trust in Berkshire, Chair of the Reading Area Police Consultative Group and was a long time member of the Reading Crime Prevention Panel. I served as a lay visitor to custody suites in Thames Valley Police stations, a councillor on Theale and Holybrook parish councils and chaired the Kennet Valley Community Association.
