John Clarke’s Expertise John Clarke’s career in major international corporations began in 1966 with Gillette in London. He held increasingly senior marketing positions responsible for brands in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa including two years in South Africa where he managed the vital blades business. In 1977, he joined British American Tobacco to be responsible for marketing the Players/Wills brands worldwide and subsequently all BAT’s international brands in the Far East. In 1980 he was appointed Marketing Director for RJR/Nabisco (RJR), responsible for Japan, Philippines, Guam and Micronesia. He moved to Japan in 1983 and was involved with the market-opening negotiations between the US and Japanese governments. During the next six years, RJR’s Japanese business grew to be the largest in RJR's Asia/Pacific group. John managed the biggest marketing budget outside the USA and directed a 300 nationwide sales force. He was appointed a Vice President in 1987. In 1988, he was approached by Citibank to develop an organisation and strategy for their Hong Kong retail banking business. He directed strategic plans and introduced professional marketing and planning into the business. In redefining Citibank's marketing he established a structure that became a blueprint for Citibank consumer businesses worldwide. During John's time with Citibank the Hong Kong consumer banking business was the corporation's largest profit earner, outside the USA, for three consecutive years. John's international experience has been extensive and enabled him to produce successful results for varied and complex businesses. He is able to work with senior managers to identify the critical issues facing the business as the foundation for the development and implementation of a strategic plan. Equally strong elements of his portfolio are the preparation of business, marketing, sales and promotional plans to achieve agreed goals and the development of any structural changes required.
