John Houston’s Expertise Work related: Diversity of development experience in environments ranging from embedded subsystems to mainframe DB2 applications, stand alone ECG carts to mainframe internals, and projects of varying size and complexity have shaped my career. While preparing to retire from IBM, I advised the teams I led for many years. Prior to retiring I served simultaneously as team lead for Time Synchronization for System z, System z Coupling adapter sub-team lead, driver of an organizational culture change team, member of the editorial team for the intellectual property newsletter for an IBM VP, consultant for other development projects, black belt and organization leader for code reviews, and a key volunteer for multiple organizations. My best work is done when I can focus my attention, as is exemplified by the patents and awards I have received. These reflect the creativity and leadership I provide across all phases of product development including design, coding, debugging, and product support. Some projects to highlight are: - Server Time Protocol through multiple changes including the change to emphasize Precision Time Protocol. - Infiniband coupling interconnect for Parallel Sysplex. - Interconnect adapter microcode for the ASCI Purple supercomputer. - WebSphere Commerce Suite state machine based environment. - Multiple generations of the Open System Adapter for IBM mainframe LAN connectivity. - Two generations of LAN gateway controllers connecting local area networks to mainframes. - Information development system for a research prototype for Prodigy. - Electrocardiogram systems for short data acquisition and analysis, as well as holter data analysis. - Patents for a diverse set of issues, some completely independent of my work assignments, including several related to people with challenges. Specialties: Design and development of high performance and high quality multitasking firmware, with a specialization in low level communications. Volunteer related: The most significant amount of my time has been focused on running the FIRST LEGO League program in the Hudson Valley region of New York. Through this program I have served in many capacities (coach, Head Judge Advisor for the region, event planning and execution), often simultaneously. I drove the creation of a 501(c)3, and have led the program through Covid and other challenges. The organization plans and runs the tournaments and other events, supports coaches, and builds support for the program throughout the region. I have also found time to perform other volunteer duties.
