  I have studied immunology and autoimmunity, specifically type 1 diabetes (T1D), for greater than 19 years. My work has primarily focused on the role of oxidative stress and free radical generation in inflammation, in particular its importance in synergizing the innate and adaptive immune response. I have also focused on understanding how oxidative stress modulates ER stress in islets, and how this ER stress affects recognition of islets by diabetogenic T cells. These studies, which aim to understand how and why auto-reactive immune cells recognize and destroy the islet, are crucial for understand the biological processes that result in T1D. These studies will inform the design of therapeutic strategies to target these processes and delay or prevent T1D in individuals genetically predisposed to autoimmunity. I have conducted and published my research on the interactions between islets and the immune response in both human islets isolated from cadaveric donors as well as in animal models of T1D, like the NOD mouse. My work has demonstrated that modulation of redox dependent signaling by a catalytic antioxidant controls aberrant immune responses, and also protects and preserves islets in human, porcine, and rodent models. While the focus of my work has been the modulation of redox reactions, my background and training have provided me with expertise in the biology of islet cells and immune cells, specifically antigen presenting cells and T cells.
