Joshua Proctor’s Expertise I am passionate about applying innovative analytic and numerical methodologies to complex, large-scale problems. I am a principal research scientist focusing on AI, deep-learning, and applied mathematics at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. I lead a variety of research projects within the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation focused in the global health and NGO sector; in support of those topical areas, I developed novel mathematical and artificial intelligence methodologies. Most recently, I have been working with generative AI techniques for global health applications and complex modeling. In this nascent field of AI and Global Health, we have been developing prototypes of AI assistants with a variety of methodological techniques, i.e., prompt engineering, retrieval augmented generation, and fine-tuning. In addition, I have a passion for nonlinear dynamical systems and developing data-driven algorithms that help in the analysis of high-dimensional data collected from temporally evolving systems. For example, I am a co-author on a book and a series of peer-reviewed articles about a recently developed methodology called Dynamic Mode Decomposition. More broadly, my research interests focus on multi-scale model design, optimization, statistical inference, machine learning, data analytics, artificial intelligence, scientific computing, and deep learning. I am interested in opportunities in which I can leverage my diverse skill set and technical expertise to provide value to my organization. I also have experience building research teams, managing research scientists, setting strategic research directions, and delivering research results to stakeholders.
