Joshua Taub’s Expertise It all began when I graduated from John Molson School of Business (Concordia University) with a Bachelors of Commerce degree and no idea what I wanted to pursue. With a major in finance and minor in entrepreneurship, I knew I had to take a risk and start my own business. At the time, I was working part-time at a hotel to pay off my student loans and save for a rainy day. I decided to apply to many financial institutions looking forward to starting a new position in my field of study. After a few months of interviews, I wasn’t pleased with the restrictions many of the firms imposed on their employees. Between the red tape and all the restrictions, I only had a few reasonable employment options. Some would say I was being extremely picky, but I just call it self awareness. Then, I hit the jackpot! One week before I was about to accept a position as a financial advisor at a wealth management firm, a client at the hotel mentioned that their independent financial advisor is amazing and that I should meet him as I just graduated in finance, and so I did. After a second interview, I respectfully declined the position offered to me and accepted a one year unpaid stage with the independent financial advisor (my mentor). I realized an independent advisor is not associated with any particular firm or bank, they offer all investment products from all banks and investment firms without bias or restriction to my clients. In addition, my mentor taught me how to file personal and corporate tax returns, analyze investment funds, analyze investment risk and returns, implement tax and investment strategies, run a personal consulting business, help clients understand the implications of their finances, and how to create a tax efficient financial plan to meet my clients future goals. It is safe to say I have been an independent financial advisor ever since and I remind myself every day how lucky I am to help my clients best save and invest for themselves and their family.
