I have focussed my research on applying fluid mechanics to complex environmental problems such as renewable energy, climate change, global ocean mixing, coral reef hydrodynamics and stratified turbulence. I have a strong publication record, and many of my articles are published in Q1 journals. I co-founded and co-head the environmental fluid mechanics research group at UKZN (https://efml.ukzn.ac.za). I have attracted a professor in fluid mechanics to my research group. The professor within our group is an NRF B rated scientist. This, together with my publication record, has resulted in our group having an international research profile. There are no comparable research groups elsewhere in the country. I have secured several research grants totalling R 1.3mil to explore ocean renewable energy and fundamentals of fluid mechanics and develop solutions for food insecurity in Africa. I am also passionate about collaborative research because I believe this is where the most creative solutions to societal problems lie. I am committed to the practical application of my research.
