His academic research forces on the role of news media in armed conflict; media coverage of human rights issues; and media censorship and its impact on democratic accountability. Dr Ubayasiri has conducted extensive research on the civil war in Sri Lanka, and his research interests focus predominantly on South and Southeast Asian countries. He is a member of the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research (GCSCR) and the co-author of Journalism for Social Change in Asia: Reporting Human Rights. Dr Ubayasiri is also a former Sri Lankan journalist and Australian-based documentary-photographer, and a MEAA/IFJ accredited photojournalist focusing on human rights and refugee migration. He has been an MEAA member for nearly two decades and an IFJ member for nearly ten years. He is a Media Section Committee Member in the Queensland Branch of the MEAA, a Federal Council Delegate in the National Media Section. Dr Ubayasiri is also a media ethicist who sits on the MEAA Ethics Committee, and the Griffith University Human Research Ethics Committee.
