Kathy Marks’s Expertise My expertise and experience bridge journalism and academia, two areas where narrative skills are critical. Journalism: I'm a multi-award-winning journalist and author with nearly 40 years' experience. My awards include a Walkley, Australia's Pulitzer equivalent, and a Kennedy Award. My non-fiction book Pitcairn: Paradise Lost is being made into a TV documentary series, and I'm working on a new book. Academia: I have extensive experience of assisting researchers at Australian universities (eg ANU, Sydney, Melbourne, UWA, UTS) with academic writing and editing. This work has included research articles for scholarly journals, and grant submissions spanning all funding organisations (ARC, NHMRC etc) and disciplines. I've also created and led grant-writing workshops. I have authored two major publications on research impact for the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and written many impact case studies. I also edit theses, reports, award submissions and policy briefs. I'm a former long-time foreign correspondent for UK national newspaper The Independent, covering the Asia-Pacific. I write long-form features for The Weekend Australian Magazine and Griffith Review (Australia's premier literary quarterly). My award-winning features include stories on voluntary assisted dying, domestic violence in the Solomon Islands and Australia's Ethiopian communities, and Indigenous identity politics in Tasmania. My book Pitcairn: Paradise Lost won Australia's most prestigious true crime-writing award, the Ned Kelly, and was shortlisted for the CAL Waverley Library Award for Literature. I have contributed freelance features to Good Weekend magazine, BBC Online, Guardian Australia and The Monthly. My essays have been anthologised in the Best Australian Essays and Best Australian Science Writing collections. I'm a journalism lecturer, at University of Sydney, UNSW and UTS. I'm outstanding at distilling complex data to extract core ideas; I have a passion for clear, concise and precise language; I'm a compelling storyteller; I have a forensic eye for detail; I'm quick to master new, intellectually challenging topics; I'm an obsessive researcher and formidable proofreader; I have a flair for translating technical and bureaucratic documents into elegant, accessible prose, and an ability to meet extremely tight deadlines. I'm highly versatile: I can write in any style or tone, and for any audience. Reports, speeches, issues papers, case studies, website copy, dry official documents - I can make them all sing and sparkle. I'm the writer you've been looking for...
